Zakarpattya Regional Center for Socio-Economic and Humanitarian Research of NAS Ukraine is a state scientific institution and a subdivision of the NAS of Ukraine. It was established in 1996 on the basis of a number of separate research units of the NAS of Ukraine, the Transcarpathian Scientific and Production Center “Ecology”, as well as research groups of the Transcarpathian Regional State Administration, which, alongside the NAS of Ukraine, acted as a co-founder of the Center.
The purpose of the Center’s scientific activity was defined as the implementation and organization of applied socio-economic and humanities research. This research is aimed at accelerating the reform of the socio-economic complex of Transcarpathia, understanding the historical and ethno-cultural problems of the region, ensuring its deeper integration into national processes as well as into European regional structures.
The initiator of the Center’s creation and its first director was Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor Ivan Mykhailovych Granchak (1995–2000). Throughout the analyzed period, the heads of the Center have been: 2000–2003: Doctor of Historical Sciences, Prof. Tokar Petro Vasylovych, 2003–2024: Candidate of Economic Sciences, Associate Professor Sember Stepan Vasylovych, since 2024: Corresponding Member of the NAS of Ukraine, Doctor of Economic Sciences, Prof. Pitiulych Mykhailo Mykhailovych.
Initially, the Center was part of the Department of History, Philosophy, and Law, and from 1999, it was reassigned to the Western Scientific Center of the NAS and the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine.
Given the dominant role of economic themes in the Center’s research, and taking into account the appeal of the Transcarpathian Regional State Administration to the NAS of Ukraine, from the end of 2004, by a decree of the Presidium of the NAS of Ukraine, it was subordinated to the Department of Economics of the NAS of Ukraine. This was done to create more favorable conditions for studying the problems of socio-economic development of Transcarpathia, cross-border cooperation with neighboring countries that became EU members, the impact of the EU on regional development, potential consequences associated with the EU’s expansion to the borders of Ukraine.
Two scientific departments were initially established within the Center: the Department of Sustainable Development of the Carpathian Region and International Cooperation, and the Department of Humanitarian Development of the Carpathian Region. Subsequently, the directions of the Center’s scientific work were refined, and its scientific departments were transformed into those currently operating Department of Socio-Economic Development of the Region and Department of Prospective Development of Rural Areas.
